Plans Change
In my last post I said I was done racing in August because I had a very loaded race schedule in September. As it turned out that plan changed when a VA appointment for an upper GI was rescheduled to the afternoon of a scheduled race. I didn’t think it would be wise trying to do both the same day with the eating restrictions that come with the test. So as an alternative I signed up for the Hardesty Hardcore 5.5 mile trail race.

It was as tough as advertised and despite winning my age group I also got another DFL! 😊 races that start with long uphills, in this case almost two miles, take me to a place I just can’t recover from if there are additional hills on the course and there definitely were. It was a beautiful area to run. Besides the medal I received for winning my age group I also got a complimentary entry into the Eugene Brews Cruise that I was planning on running with Smitty on Labor Day.

Smitty and I finished 1st and 2nd in our age group after we were 1st and 3rd last year and I actually ran four seconds faster than last year. As long as we’re both in Eugene for Labor Day this will continue to be a tradition like Butte to Butte on July 4th.

The next race was another Taco Tuesday and we thought we caught a break in the weather between rainfall. As it turned out the rain started as soon as the race started and ended when we were finishing. As it turned out a rainfall record was set for that day. The good news is that I ran my fastest 5K of 2019. (Still slow as hell 😳).

The final race in the 8 days was the Cottage Grove 10K and again it was foggy and cloudy the entire race. This is a race I doubt I would do again because the emphasis was on the half and the 10K was treated like an afterthought. According to my Fitbit it was a long 10K by a little and just going off the signage for the half (the only signage there was) it was along. I was pleased with the results though my first 5K was right around what I’ve been doing in 5K’s all year and I didn’t fall apart the second half of the race.

In the meantime between rainfall I’ve been trying to get pastures ready to plant and then planting new grass seed. I got the last field ready Sunday, finishing up in the rain so now it just has to be planted.

I’ve got four more races scheduled this month two here in Oregon this week and two new states on my trip to St. Louis.

My plan now as I’m writing this is to race next Saturday in St. Cloud, Minnesota and Sunday in Madison, Wisconsin on my way to Stacie’s. Race the Blue Note 5K in St. Louis the next weekend and then reevaluate. In the meantime I’m looking forward to another road trip on different highways and byways.

I raced three times in eight days the starting the next Saturday and they were all unique in their own way. The first was another small town race not far from here, the Walterville Waddle. It was cool, cloudy and some drizzle which I think may be the theme for Oregon racing for several months to come.

I last wrote in this post on Sunday a week ago and like the title of this post says “Plans Change”. I had said I had two more races in Oregon before leaving tomorrow for St. Louis. As it turned out after the Cottage Grove 10K my knee hurt so much the next couple of days that I didn’t even try to run. The fact that it was pretty much nonstop rain made the decision easier. By Tuesday I got out between rain showers and ran three miles and decided that I wasn’t going to run Thursday nights race. On Thursday I did get out and did four miles and decided to still drive to Salem for Saturday’s Race for Recovery. While my knee is still messed up I was glad I did it.
