Virtual Racing!
If someone would have told me just a month ago that I would think Virtual Races were a good thing I would have said “no way I’ll ever do one”! Boy has my opinion changed. This quarantine and stay at home order as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we have looked at many things. My opinion of virtual racing now is that it is a great alternative for not being able to race at all. I ended my last post talking about my first ever venture into virtual racing when I did the Neilson Challenge virtually.

Another element of this “new normal” requiring social distancing is our inability to travel to visit friends and family. Easter was really different for me because for the past several years I’ve spent it with the O’Connells in Missouri. This year even the four of us that live on the property here in Oregon didn’t even sit down to eat together because of my doctor’s advice to stay away from people. The reason that applies to my sister, my niece and Gregg all have much more contact with others than I do and I’m not risking second hand exposure. We had nice meals though. On Saturday I bought dinner from our local restaurant that we are still trying to support and on Sunday I grilled for the first time this year and made hamburgers that Donna bought.

Stacie sent me a box of goodies for Easter that I was thrilled to receive, especially the Nutty Bars. 😄

I also received a very appropriate tee shirt and a mug with paint pens to document my states raced in. Presently I’m stuck on 39. A timeline for the final 11 states is out of my hands like so many other things that are dependent upon this Coronavirus situation.

Stacie sent me an Easter selfie family portrait that they took.

So I responded with my own Easter selfie. Gotta love those black jelly beans. 😂

Since 7 cats apparently weren’t enough we had a stray start hanging around and eating when it could so Brandy started setting food out so the newbie wouldn’t have to deal with the other seven to get food. On Sunday it must have decided it had had enough because it let Brandy pick it up with no complaints and Donna and Brandy washed its eyes out and put it in a crate with its own food and water until it seems less starving. On Monday we found out it is a he so we named him Ronnie after the Coronavirus. Seemed appropriate. When I first held him I thought he might have been a young cat or kitten because he felt so small but then when I saw that he was missing most of his teeth I actually think he may be old. Whatever just like every animal we have he’ll be well cared for.

I completed my second virtual event this past Saturday the day before Easter. I did a Run Fierce event called the Vietnam Veterans 58 Mile Challenge. I started it on the 1st of April and finished it on the 11th. I did 8 five mile days and 3 six mile days. By comparison my monthly mileage totals for the first three months of the year were 20, 28 and 49. The factors going into completing this challenge were many. First my desire to honor those who gave their lives during the Vietnam War. Second, to honor my friends that I knew before and during Vietnam who also served. Third, I made a goal to do 100 miles for the month of April. Fourth, the medal is a great replica of our Vietnam service medal. And finally and maybe most importantly because my primary doctor started me on a medication for hypothyroidism my energy level is higher than it has been in years. I don’t know if that will translate to doing better when I start running again but I’m beyond thrilled to finally not feel exhausted literally all the time.
